What is Contradiction?
Since our decision in 2011 to become an Artisan Merchant Bottler, in addition to being a Craft Distiller, we’ve often thought it would be fun to blend a little of what we make here (which is good but let’s face it, still young) with some of the older sourced whiskey we have. We have been and remain very proud of our knack for bringing you good things we make, and good things we don’t; and don’t view those two efforts as being at odds with one another. We also think we have pretty knowledgeable taste-buds, and strive to earn the trust of spirits lovers everywhere to be consistently relied upon to put good stuff in the bottle ~ regardless of age, blend, proof or provenance.
Contradiction is a blend of straight bourbon whiskey; 27% is a 2 year-old wheated bourbon we make here in West Virginia, and 73% is the 9 year-old bourbon we bottle as Smooth Ambler Old Scout. Marrying the two has some interesting effects: the wheater evens out the spice inherent in the high-rye mash bill of Old Scout, and the older whiskey pulls the younger kicking and screaming into the realm of a drink-ability more refined and complex than it could be on its own. Additionally, the flavor profile achieves the result of a four-grain bourbon; corn, wheat, rye and barley.
Like all of our other whiskeys – house made and not – Contradiction is non chill-filtered, and made with love, care and passion. And just like our other whiskeys, we hope you drink and enjoy the hell out of it!
